The Bloomhouse, Austin, Texas

Creature Comforts in a Weird Texas Abode

Magical and whimsical, this truly unique structure is straight out of a fractured fairytale!

  • Location: The Bloomhouse is built into the hills of West Austin, TX, in a valley off a narrow, winding road.
  • Amenities: One bedroom with a queen bed; one sofa bed in the living room; washer/dryer; full kitchen with all cooking necessities; outdoor dining area with gas grill; outdoor shower; personal chef may be added for an additional fee
  • Tripsy Gypsy’s Musings: When you drive away from the shores of Lake Austin through West Lake Hills on your way up to the Bloomhouse, you come upon a side street where the fantastical beast-like structure comes into view sitting down low in a wooded valley. Billed as “the most unusual home in the world,” the eco-friendly house was originally built in 1973 and then fully restored to its former grandeur in 2018. There is a designated parking area just off the side street, in a lovely neighborhood which feels very safe, but the trek on foot down the winding paved path is a little steep and treacherous, particularly at night. Because everything is made of stone, wood, and marble, the location is not conducive to small children. There’s a lovely seating area on the back deck overlooking the woods, complete with a high-end gas grill, which we utilized for outdoor eating before retiring to the living area, where we enjoyed playing the provided guitar and bongos. There is also a stereo sound system that plays throughout the entire house. And who doesn’t love a good outdoor shower off the master bath? All in all, this unusual abode lives up to its promise of “keeping Texas weird” while delivering on all the conventional comforts of home.
  • Cost: $$$$. (personal chef added for additional fee)
