Adeline's House of Cool, Markesan, WI

Eclectic Oddities at a Remote Wisconsin Estate

With a gigantic hot tub and oodles of funky decor to explore, there’s no need to venture out.

  • Location: Adeline’s House of Cool is 45 miles east of the Wisconsin Dells and 100 miles southwest of Green Bay in the tiny town of Markesan. Limited dining and shopping options within the immediate vicinity.
  • Amenities: Six bedrooms; 20-foot hot tub with adjoining dining area; game room with wet bar and fireplace; fully stocked kitchen.
  • Tripsy Gypsy’s Musings: The flavor of this estate is beyond compare! Markesan is literally in the middle of nowhere, so if your desire is to experience amusement parks or nearby fine dining or hot nightlife spots, this place would be a hard no. However, it’s so amazing that you very likely will not even want to leave the property. I stayed in November, so there was snow, as is typical for Wisconsin. I love the snow, so it was dreamy for me, but there are many additional fun things to enjoy in warmer months, such as a private pier with channel access to Puckaway Lake. The home’s exterior is adorned with an expansive handcrafted, stained-glass awning, oversized outdoor purple velvet curtains, and large French doors. As you enter, you are greeted by a negligee-clad mannequin in an antique phone booth — and that’s just the beginning. You can literally spend hours exploring the amusing oddities in every nook and cranny of this massive estate. All six guest bedrooms are on the upper level, each with individual access to a screened-in, wrap-around deck with hanging benches and adult-size rocking horses for your riding pleasure. Down the hall from the bedrooms wing is a great room with a large woodburning fireplace, comfortable couches, and entertainment center complete with snacks. For easy access back down to the main floor, just slide down the fire pole! The bar is an experience unto itself — a huge space with a pool table, slot and pinball machines, piano, woodburning fireplace, dance floor, and a jukebox. Of course the 20-foot hot tub in its own private room is the pièce de résistance. More the size of a small swimming pool, it was the highlight of the house for me. If you’re looking for the nearest town with dining and shopping options, plan on making a 15-mile drive to Princeton. However, I stumbled upon a cozy bar less than five minutes away with good bar food and friendly people. There were food specials every night, the same crowd always showed up, and I felt very welcome.
  • Cost: $$$$.
