New England Spa Hotel: There’s No Place Like Dome

It looks like an igloo, but it’s a cozy home with an indoor pool!

  • Location:  A two-hour drive north of New York City, the Prana Residence & Spa is located in an isolated space outside the small town of Cornwall, CT. It should be noted that there is an apartment above the garage on the opposite end of the property from the master bedroom, and this unit is rented out year-round. I did not see the renter while I was there, but I noted that there was a new vehicle parked on that side of the driveway in the morning.
  • Amenities:  Full-size heated, indoor pool; outdoor jacuzzi (small); indoor dry sauna; indoor cold plunge pool; bathtub jacuzzi in master bedroom; all the basic amenities of a fully stocked house/kitchen. Spa, butler, chef, and daily cleaning services available for an additional fee. Cell service may be sketchy.
  • Tripsy Gypsy’s Musings:  Nestled in the woods, the domed structure of the house is delightful. As you pull into the driveway, it definitely offers a sense of peace and tranquility. The inside decor is nostalgic and quirky to match the mood of the house. That being said, it is an old structure in the woods, and comes with what one would expect from that. If you’re looking for everything to be pristine and luxurious, you will be disappointed, as the house is dated. Nevertheless, the entire place tickled my senses. There is an inordinate amount of paperwork to be filled out in advance, so be prepared for that. The living room with its red spiral staircase and working fireplace made me smile. The sunroom is a fabulous spot for a cup of coffee. The master bedroom is interesting in that the bathtub/jacuzzi and the toilet are located right in the room with no separation from the bed. Of course there are bathrooms in the rest of the house for the sake of privacy. The small outdoor jacuzzi is directly outside the sliding glass doors of the master bedroom. There is a private hallway off the master bedroom which leads to the area of the indoor dry sauna, cold plunge pool and indoor heated pool. I spent about 90 percent of my visit there in the indoor pool. It’s spectacular. The town has your typical quaint New England charm, but the dining options were limited. I found a very cute soup and sandwich shop for lunch and a little café for breakfast; the food served at both establishments was very tasty and both offered outdoor seating. The residence is expensive to rent and there are restrictions on minimum stays at most times; however, the pool sold me on this peaceful retreat. I did not sign up for any of the add-ons.
  • Cost: $$$. Spa treatments and private chef services available for an additional fee.
